As we move towards the close of this year and get ready to start 2008, we're going to be hiring for several different positions. Anthony told me that when we have 1,000 people coming to Oak Leaf Church then I can get a personal assistant. There's about three other areas where we want to put some people as well.
But we're not going to advertise these positions on various church staff websites. Here's the deal. A seminiary degree isn't top of the list for these positions. Education isn't the silver bullet. I did about 40 hours towards a seminary degree, but it really didn't prepare me for what I'm doing now. One day, I may finish that up, but education isn't the silver bullet. Neither is experience in the job. Very few of us on this staff have done what we're doing before. Our executive pastor was a teacher last year. Our director of volunteers worked in a doctors office. (Luckily, our worship leader did play guitar before). Too many times, I've seen churches hired experienced guys, but then have to take two years to beat out the experience so they can fit on the team.
What do we look for? Commitment, dedication, buy-in, the ability to work hard, and the ability to learn. We look for leaders.
And here's where we're looking...inside our church. If you want one of these jobs in the future, then I recommend that you jump in somewhere in our church and start serving. There are a few people that we have in mind (you may not even know it), but your name is being mentioned because we see how hard you volunteer, and we know that you financially support this church (yes, I look that stuff up, because you can say you believe in our church all you want, but as Jesus says...your treasure follows your heart). The best advice I can give for working here is not to work on your resume, but to work on the ministry. If you want to work with children, become an amazing volunteer in KidVenture. Then when a job opens up, we'll come to you first.
If you aren't a hard working volunteer, then chances are, you won't be a hard working staff member. A paycheck doesn't change someones work ethic. So anyway, I'm pumped about hiring an assistant. I'm even more pumped about some of these other opportunities that we have to get Oak Leafers in here on a more permanent basis. We're watching.
